Transportation Planner Intern

 Period: September 2017-December 2017

Hours: 25 hours/week

Description:

The City of Hoboken’s Department and Transportation and Parking is seeking a Transportation Planning Intern for September through December 2017. This is a great opportunity to gain experience working in a dynamic, multi-modal urban environment. The Transportation Planning Intern will have the opportunity to help enhance the City’s award-winning Complete Streets Program, participate in improving the City’s multi-modal transportation demand management programs, develop a Vision Zero campaign, and more.

Examples of Work:

  • Assist with updating the City’s Complete Streets Policy
  • Conduct traffic counts and field data collection
  • Analyze crash data and develop strategies for improving street safety
  • Create GIS shapefiles and maps
  • Develop metrics to analyze Hoboken’s citywide car sharing program, Corner Cars
  • Analyze data and provide program oversight of the City’s bike share program, Hudson Bike Share
  • Analyze data and operations of the City’s local bus system, “The Hop”
  • Develop an online transportation data portal for public view
  • Assist with drafting updates to the Hoboken Municipal Code
  • Collaborate on projects with the City’s Resiliency and Sustainability Task Forces

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 30 graduate-level semester hours in transportation planning or similar field

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to prepare maps, charts, and graphs
  • Ability to conduct research and survey activities
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and specifications
  • Strong proficiency in ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop

Salary: $15-$20/hr.

Transportation Engineer Intern

Period: September 2017-December 2017

Hours: 25 hours/week

Description:

The City of Hoboken’s Department and Transportation and Parking is seeking a Transportation Engineering Intern for September 2017 through December 2017. This is a great opportunity to gain experience working in a dynamic, multi-modal urban environment. The Transportation Engineering Intern will have the opportunity to help enhance the City’s award winning Complete Streets Program, evaluate the need for new traffic signals and multi-way stop controlled intersections, conduct speed studies for the City’s “20 is Plenty” program, help develop a 5-year capital improvements program for roadway resurfacing, and more.

Examples of Work:

  • Assist with updating the City’s Complete Streets Policy
  • Conduct traffic counts and analyses
  • Carry out pavement condition assessments
  • Conduct multi-way stop and traffic signal warrant analyses
  • Conduct speed studies
  • Review draft engineering plans for the City’s road projects
  • Generate traffic models
  • Create GIS shapefiles and maps
  • Assist with drafting updates to the Hoboken Municipal Code
  • Collaborate on projects with the City’s Resiliency and Sustainability Task Forces

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 30 graduate-level semester hours in transportation engineering or similar field

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and specifications
  • Strong familiarity with State and Federal engineering roadway design standards
  • Strong proficiency in ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Ability to perform drafting operations in preparation of plans
  • Proficiency with engineering and planning software, such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Synchro, SimTraffic, etc.

Salary: $15-$20/hr.
