Since 2020, the City of Hoboken and the Friends of Elysian Park have partnered to improve the safety surfaces, landscape, drainage, and dog run in Elysian Park.
In 2020, the City installed new safety surfacing and improved drainage by installing piping and an underground cistern which will accommodate drainage from both playground areas and the dog run. A system of flat panel drainage pipes was placed on the subsurface of the playground and will lead to a larger perforated pipe at the edge of the northern playground area. The larger perforated pipe allows rain water to flow into the cistern and infiltrate into the ground.
The rubber safety surface in that playground area was replaced with synthetic safety turf, similar to Columbus Park and Jefferson Park.
The soil quality, grass, and permeability of the great lawn along Hudson Street were also restored and an organic lawn improvement program has been in place ever since.
In 2021, the dog run was renovated with modern K9 turf and an upgraded drainage system, with funding provided by Hudson County’s Open Space Trust Fund. The dog run renovations included the excavation of the previous stone surface, the installation of a system of drainage pipes around the perimeter to the dog run, which will allow water to flow into the cistern, the installation of synthetic K9 turf with Envirofill, and the masonry rehabilitation of the fountain.
A system of drainage pipes will be constructed around the perimeter to the southern playground area, which will allow water to flow into the cistern. The rubber safety surface in that playground area will be replaced with synthetic safety turf.
