Municipal Garage Projects:

In 2021, the Hoboken Parking Utility (HPU) installed new, state-of-the-art parking technology in the municipal garages. These improvements had included a new parking access system as well as a parking guidance system. The system’s improved technology streamlined the parking and payment experience for users with the following key improvements:

  • License plate recognition (LPR)cameras: As each vehicle enters a garage, a license plate recognition (LPR) camera scans each vehicle's license plate, granting access to monthly permit parkers and registering entrance times for hourly parkers. Monthly parkers may add multiple license plates per account but only one vehicle per account will be allowed inside of the garage at a time. If a permit holder changes their license plate, they will be required to update the license plate number in their online account or contact the garage office at 201-653-7333.
  • Online account portal for Monthly and "HHELPR" accounts: Monthly parking customers can now conveniently make monthly payments by credit or debit card, setup autopay, update account information, and more, with a new online account portal. Automatic payments begin on the 1st of your start month, as well as a $3.00 convenience fee, added to credit card and debit card payments made through the online portal.
  • Parking guidance system: The new RedStorm Parking Guidance System notifies drivers of real-time parking spot availability through a digital sign displayed at the entrance of each garage. Parking availability information will also be accessible through the City's website.
  • E-Validation system: A new online-based merchant validation system that streamlines the ability for merchants to purchase, activate, and track discount parking validations for their customers.
  • Compatibility with popular parking reservations platforms: The new parking access system is compatible with popular parking reservation services, such as ParkWhiz and Spot Hero, which allows customers to reserve a parking space in a municipal garage before ever leaving their home.
  • Touchless payments: With license plate recognition (LPR) cameras, daily parkers, HHELPR parkers, and e-validation beneficiaries will be able to simply insert a credit or debit card for payment in the exit lane.
