South Waterfront Improvements

The City of Hoboken and the South Waterfront Corporation are improving the walkway on the South waterfront between Sinatra Drive and Newark Street, and along Pier A.

Walkway Project

In 2020, the walkway project improved the pavers, railings, benches, lighting, trees, and plantings along the waterfront walkway from Pier A to Pier C. Improvements included:

  • Resetting 21,600 SF pavers and adding 1,350 SF new papers
  • Hand sanding and painting 30,600 SF railings
  • Removing 3 dead trees, adding 18 new trees to the walkway area and 23 new trees to the area between the bikeway and Sinatra Drive
  • Adding more than 200 native plants to the area between the walkway and bikeway
  • Resetting granite steps on Pier A that have shifted
  • Upgrading 10 lighting fixture heads to LED, hand sanding and painting
  • Installing a new irrigation system for trees along the walkway

Bikeway Project

In Fall 2022, this project will enhance mobility and improve pedestrian and bicycle safety by upgrading the bikeway along the waterfront walkway from Pier A to Pier C. Proposed improvements include:

  • Connecting the bikeway to the waterfront walkway at 4th Street and Newark Street
  • Consolidating crosswalks to direct pedestrians from the west side of Sinatra Drive to the waterfront walkway
  • Upgrading the signage and surface of the bikeway to meet modern standards
  • Additional tree plantings and vegetation east and west of the bicycle path
  • New wayfinding signage and benches

Schedule

Construction will begin in September, 2022, and is anticipated to be completed in December, 2022. Construction hours are 8 AM – 4 PM Monday through Friday, with equipment set up beginning no earlier than 7 AM and breakdown ending no later than 6 PM.

Certain areas of the waterfront bikeway will be unavailable to the community during construction. All areas will be secured for public safety.

Health and Safety

The City is dedicated to ensuring public health and safety during construction, and the project includes measures addressing health and safety that the Contractor must abide to, including measures to minimize noise, dust, and odor. The project will follow an approved soil erosion and sediment control plan.

The Contractor for this project is Zenith Construction, and the Construction Manager is Kimley-Horn/ENGenuity. The City of Hoboken is overseeing project coordination.

South Waterfront Corporation

The south waterfront improvements are funded by the South Waterfront Corporation, with no funding from the municipal budget.

The South Waterfront Corporation consists of the City of Hoboken, the Port Authority, Ironstate Development, SJP Properties, and Mack-Cali. Developer members of the South Waterfront Corporation pay an annual assessment for operations and maintenance of the southern waterfront which includes Pier A, Pier C, and the adjoining waterfront walkway.
