During intense rain events at high tide, wet weather pumps operated by the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) pump stormwater out of the system against the tide, preventing sewers from filling to capacity and overflowing onto streets.
The NHSA wet weather flood pump at Observer Highway, completed in 2011, has been a tremendous success in significantly reducing flooding in the City’s southwest neighborhood (H1 sewershed).
The City worked with NHSA to purchase and install an additional pump to service northwest Hoboken (H5 sewershed), completed in 2016. Now operational, this pumping station provides major relief from flooding for the Northwest Section of the City.
