The Department of Infrastructure works to improve quality of life through operations and maintenance of Hoboken’s public spaces. We maintain municipal parks and buildings, collect garbage and recycling, sweep and plow the streets, and repair potholes. We also enforce the municipal code related to sanitation, recycling, plastic bags, and trees. The department also oversees the Division of Recreation and facility requests. The Department also prepares Hoboken and its most vulnerable residents to adapt to the impacts of climate changes and drives greenhouse gas emissions reductions through planning, policy, procedures, capital investment, and community education. The Department collaborates across City departments and with other levels of governments, non-profit, and private sector partners to deploy sustainable and innovative solutions that enhance the delivery of capital projects and City services.

The Department coordinates efforts to meet or exceed Climate Action Plan goals for greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Key initiatives include fleet electrification, building energy efficiency, open space development, reduction of heat islands, urban tree canopy expansion, zero waste initiative implementation, stormwater and coastal flood risk management, and more.

The Department also oversees divisions including Sustainability and Resiliency, Capital Planning, Engineering and Water Utility, Innovation and Data, and Information Systems.

Infrastructure

RECYCLING AND WASTE COLLECTION

The department manages city wide garbage, recycling, and bulk removal programs. The Department also coordinates with the county to provide drop off days for hazardous materials. Learn more about Hoboken's trash, recycling, and pet waste programs.

All items for pick up should be placed curb side after 9 PM (limited business area) or 7:30 PM (remainder of the City) on the appropriate day. Failure to follow this and other municipal ordinances can result in the issuing of a summons.

CODE ENFORCEMENT

The department enforces the Municipal Code as it pertains to garbage, recycling, litter, weeds, trees, streets, sidewalks, snow removal, and water conservation. These are regulated by the following chapters of the City Code: Chapter 62 Shade Tree Commission, Chapter 110 Garbage, Rubbish, and Litter, Chapter 136-2 Prohibited Acts, Chapter 148 Plastic Bags, Chapter 151 Recycling, and Chapter 193 Article III Outdoor Landscape Water Conservation Guidelines.

PARKS

STREETS

The department repairs minor potholes on municipal streets, and coordinates with Hudson County to repair potholes on County roads. To report a pothole, click here. SNOW REMOVAL

During winter weather, the department manages snow removal on municipal streets, parks, and buildings. The Department also coordinates with Hudson County for snow removal on County roads. Learn more about winter weather operations.

TREES

The Hoboken Shade Tree Commission oversees the regulation, planting, care, and control of trees along roadways, in parks and public places in the City of Hoboken. Property owners are responsible for stewardship of street trees adjacent to their property. Any planting or pruning of street trees requires a tree permit. Sewer

North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) owns and operates Hoboken’s combined sanitary and storm sewer system. Report a clogged catch basin or sewer issue, or call 1.866.689.3970 for the emergency hotline.

Water

Veolia operates and maintains Hoboken's water system. Report a service issue, water discoloration, pay your bill, or change service, or call 1.800.422.0141.
