Recycling & Garbage Pickup

All items for collection should be placed curb side after 7:30pm on the appropriate day (9pm for Washington Street). Failure to follow this and other municipal ordinances can result in the issuing of a summons.

Garbage and recycling collection in Hoboken takes place during overnight hours. Click here to learn why Hoboken collects waste overnight.

Recycling collection is dual-stream. Click here to learn about dual-stream recycling.

Storm Flood Zones

Residents parked on the street during the day are encouraged to monitor weather reports and move vehicles from flood-prone areas if there is the potential for flooding, which occurs when strong rains coincide with high tides. Vehicles in these areas can suffer severe damage as a result of flooding.

Residents concerned about potential overnight flooding are reminded that overnight parking from 8pm to 8am is available in Municipal Garages B, D, and Midtown for $5. Regular garage fees will apply during the day. In the case that a flood warning is issued, the City of Hoboken will provide free parking in Municipal Garage B (located on 2nd Street between Hudson and River streets) and waive the $5 fee for residents in flood prone areas with a valid residency parking permit. This policy does not apply to Garages D and Midtown - only for those parked in Garage B. Click here for a map of storm flood zones and barricade locations.

Emergency Snow Routes

As soon as City streets are covered with a layer of snow, cars must be removed from all emergency snow routes. These routes are clearly identified on street signs. Violators will be towed. This is necessary to move ambulances and police and fire vehicles throughout Hoboken in times of emergency for the safety and welfare of all our citizens. Click here to view the list emergency snow routes.

Street Cleaning

Vehicle parking is not permitted during street cleaning hours. Click here for a city-wide list of alternate side street parking hours.

Parking & Getting Around

Welcome to Hoboken, one of the most walkable cities in America! We've made it so easy to live car-free and still have access to a car when you need one. Hoboken encourages all residents to consider living car-free by providing Corner Cars - cars available to rent by the hour on a corner near you - for when you need a car. We also provide discounts to residents for longer term car rentals, and of course Hoboken is incredibly easy to get around without a car since we have an excellent community shuttle system called "The Hop", as well as bicycle lanes and parking all around the city. Besides, the city is much more exciting when you're not behind a windshield!

Car-sharing Unless you drive to work everyday, you don't need a car in Hoboken! You can save thousands of dollars each year by giving up the car habit and signing up for Hoboken's Corner Cars program. What is it? The New York Times calls Corner Cars a "bold new experiment" to ease congestion that's "about as convenient as car rental could ever be." Once you're a member (membership is free!) you can reserve any available car online or by phone for one hour or a week or more! Hourly rates begin at $5/hour and vary per car, but one thing is constant: you will save thousands of dollars versus owning a car in Hoboken! Corner Cars are conveniently parked in reserved on-street spaces throughout the city and available when you need them. In addition to Corner Cars on-street, there are also dozens of ZipCars in municipal and private garages and lots around the city. Never worry about finding a parking space again! Click here to learn more about car-sharing.

Municipal Garages The City of Hoboken has five municipal parking garages available for residents, visitors, and businesses who desire to park off-street. Parking in all of these garages is available to residents (and in some garages non-residents) on a monthly basis. Click here for details.

On-Street Parking & Parking Permits Residents may apply for parking permits at the Hoboken Parking Utility office, in City Hall. Be sure to bring all the necessary documentation along with the annual permit fee depending on if you're the first ($55), second ($110), or third ($220) vehicle. Cars with a valid Resident Permit Decal may be parked in front of either the green "Residential" or the white "Permit" parking signs. To manage road congestion and ensure that residents, business, and visitors can enjoy street parking, local ordinances are strictly enforced, so make sure you read our suggestions
