The Hoboken Fire Department is an all-hazards emergency response agency, dedicated to protecting lives, property, and environment. Our highly trained professionals respond to fires, technical rescues, hazardous materials incidents, water emergencies, medical calls, and natural disasters. Guided by a commitment to preparedness and public safety, the HFD combines operational excellence with proactive training and risk reduction.

About Us

The Fire Division is staffed by 128 firefighters, and 19 civilian professionals, who collectively respond to approximately 5,000 emergency incidents each year. Operational deployments include a Tour Commander, three engine companies, two ladder companies, and one rescue company, under the leadership of a Fire Chief and Deputy Chief of Operations.

Operating in one of the most densely populated cities in the United States, the HFD maintains a high level of readiness to address complex urban emergencies with speed, coordination, and professionalism.

Specialized & Regional Response

The HFD plays a critical role in regional emergency response through active participation in specialized task forces, enhancing our ability to manage large-scale and complex incidents, including:

  • Urban Area Security Initiative Metro Urban Search & Rescue Strike Team (UASI MUST): Technical rescue operations for structural collapse, confined space, rope rescue, and other high-risk incidents throughout northern New Jersey.
  • New Jersey Regional Fireboat Task Force (NJRFTF): Maritime firefighting and emergency response on the Hudson River and across the Port of New York and New Jersey

Fire Prevention

The Bureau of Fire Prevention and Investigation is focused on Community Risk Reduction. Staffed by a Fire Marshal and a team of inspectors, the Bureau focuses on four core areas:

  • Code Enforcement: Ensuring compliance with local and state fire safety regulations
  • Public Education: Delivering outreach programs to promote fire prevention and life safety awareness
  • Engineering & Risk Mitigation: Advancing safer building practices and hazard reduction strategies
  • Fire Investigation: Determining the origin and cause of fires to improve prevention efforts

Call us at 201-420-2004 for emergencies and 201-420-2007 for non-emergencies. Call 201-420-2268 for fire inspection or code enforcement questions. For more information, follow us on X at @HobokenFire, and on the Hoboken Public Safety Department's Facebook and Instagram pages.
