The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Fire Department are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8 to Oct. 14, 2023.
This year’s theme is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.” The campaign is meant to educate the public about simple and important actions that can be taken when cooking to keep everyone safe in the kitchen.
According to the NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States and unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths. HFD reminds residents of cooking safety tips to help reduce the risk of a cooking fire, including:
The HFD will also be observing Fire Prevention Month throughout October by reminding residents of fire prevention tips through social media posts, and updates on the department’s website. Firefighters will visit local schools to educate Hoboken’s youngest residents about how to best prevent fires in their homes and schools to keep themselves and their families safe.
In addition to kitchen safety, the Department will focus on other topics including lithium-ion battery safety, having a fire safety plan and escape route, and the importance of smoke detectors. The HFD urges everyone to prioritize fire safety during Fire Prevention Month, to reduce the risk of fires, limit fire related injuries and fatalities, and protect our community.
