The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps (HVAC), celebrating its 55th year in service, kicked off EMS week with a headquarters rededication ceremony and ribbon cutting for a new state-of–the art training facility on Saturday, May 16.
The ceremony, which took place during HVAC’s Annual Appreciation Barbeque, honored HVAC co-founders William “Bill” Matthews and Edward F. McIntyre Sr. by dedicating headquarters in their names, in recognition of their lasting contributions to Hoboken. Members of the Matthews and McIntyre families were on hand for the ceremony, during which HVAC also unveiled its new training center. The facility will be used for EMT continuing education, as well as public CPR and first aid courses. The training facility was funded through fundraising efforts and private donations.
“The new training facility is an investment into the future of HVAC and ensures it will continue preparing the next generation of emergency responders,” said Mayor Emily B. Jabbour who was at the ceremony and presented a proclamation to HVAC and its members. “This is the perfect way to begin EMS Week, by celebrating the volunteers and professionals who have cared for the people of Hoboken for more than five decades!”
“For 55 years, countless volunteers have answered the call whenever help was needed,” said Thomas Molta, HVAC President. “Now we have a dedicated space where future EMTs can continue to learn and train, and community members can come and learn potentially lifesaving skills.”
National EMS Week, which runs May 17 through May 23 this year, recognizes emergency medical services professionals and volunteers across the country for their dedication and lifesaving service to their communities.
Residents can continue to support HVAC, its volunteers, and its mission by making donations, enrolling in CPR and first aid classes at the new facility, and by participating in its upcoming Annual Golf Fundraiser on June 18, at Skyway Golf Course.
