The City of Hoboken today unveiled new public art at four uptown storm drains painted by 25 Hoboken public school students to promote the Weehawken Cove Restoration Project and education campaign. The storm drains are part of the project's education campaign to promote keeping the Hudson River estuary clean of litter and debris.
Throughout Earth Week, Connors, Brandt, and Wallace Elementary Schools and Hoboken Middle School students painted storm drains at the intersections of Adams and 13th Streets, Clinton and 13th Streets, Willow Avenue and 13th Street, and Grand and 13th Streets. The public art encourages residents and visitors to keep the community clean to prevent litter from entering the Hudson River.
The City of Hoboken, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program, NY NJ HEP, and Riverkeeper, launched the Weehawken Cove Restoration project to rehabilitate the cove as an ecosystem for marine wildlife in 2021.
The project began with the removal of 14 abandoned and derelict vessels from Weehawken Cove and is in its second phase, including the ongoing repair to the 16th Street bulkhead and public waterfront walkway adjacent to the cove.
As part of the project, the City and Riverkeeper, will continue an education campaign to promote anti-littering, environmental stewardship, and safeguarding of the natural ecosystems of the cove in an effort to restore marine habitats and prevent the future abandonment of marine vessels.
The City is also designing a living shoreline at the cove and will launch this final phase of the project by the end of 2023.
The Weehawken Cove Restoration Project is funded through the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres program with the assistance of Riverkeeper and the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program, and a grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Program.
