Mayor Jabbour invites community to shop citywide Earth Day Gate Sale on Saturday, April 18

Mayor Emily B. Jabbour, the City of Hoboken, and the Hoboken Green Team today invited residents and visitors to shop the citywide Earth Day Gate Sale on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gate sale will feature more than 150 households with sales of gently used items taking place at Church Square Park and on stoops and sidewalks throughout the mile square city.

Shoppers can explore participating locations and listed items for sale through an online city map by CLICKING HERE. Items for sale include vintage clothing items, new clothing items, shoes, name brand bags, vinyl records, decor, small appliances, furniture, toys, strollers, bicycles, and more.

“Events like our Earth Day Gate Sale show how small, everyday actions can make a meaningful difference in reducing waste and building a more sustainable community,” said Mayor Jabbour. “By giving items a second life, residents are decluttering their homes and helping Hoboken move closer to our climate goals. I encourage everyone to come out and shop some unique finds!”

This community-wide event encourages sustainable practices by giving residents the opportunity to sell and purchase secondhand items which helps reduce landfill waste. Reducing waste is a key component of Hoboken’s Climate Action Plan, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero energy by 2030. Currently, solid waste accounts for approximately five percent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions, which is equal to roughly 161,000 tons annually. Materials sent to landfills release methane as they decompose. By extending the life of household goods and clothing through reuse, residents can help lower emissions tied to both waste disposal and the production and transportation of new items.

The Earth Day Gate Sale also supports the Climate Action Plan’s focus on sustainable consumption and community engagement as essential strategies for reducing emissions and fostering a more resilient, environmentally responsible city.

The event is cohosted by the Hoboken Green Team, a volunteer organization created in 2011, to help encourage residents and community members to lead more sustainable lives through education, events, and public engagement.
